Before celebrating National Brisket Day on May 28, we wanted to do some research! There’s no better way to do that than diving into a plate full of smoky, tender barbecue. The Good Food Polk team made our way down to Smokin’ DJ’s in the downtown district of Lake Wales to visit one of the newest additions to the local BBQ scene.

Smokin’ DJ’s offers a laid-back vibe, and a menu packed with barbecue favorites and hearty sides. We started our tasting with the star of the day: brisket and not just any brisket, but a staff favorite. We ordered a 1/2 pound, and from the first bite, it was clear it was a winner. The brisket had a perfectly rendered fat cap, a deep smoky flavor, and that tender, melt-in-your-mouth texture that BBQ lovers dream of. The bark? Bold, peppery, and packed with flavor! A must-have for true brisket fans.

Our meat journey didn’t stop there. We added two types of sausage to the mix: a classic Georgia sausage and an incredibly juicy burnt-end brisket sausage. The latter was hands down one of the meal's highlights, with a rich flavor. The 1/2 rack of ribs and 1/2 pound of pulled pork were equally impressive. The ribs offered a satisfying bite and a flavor-forward bark that separated them from the average slab. The pulled pork was tender and peppery.  Great on its own or dressed with a splash of sauce.

To measure a great BBQ joint, you can’t skip the sides, and Smokin’ DJ’s had a great variety. We tried the cowboy baked beans, coleslaw, potato salad, and mac & cheese. Each one brought its own comfort and flavor. The beans had a sweet-smoky cinnamon flavor that paired beautifully with the meats, the coleslaw was crisp and balanced, and the mac & cheese was creamy with just the right amount of richness.

Of course, no BBQ visit is complete without tasting the sauces, and DJ’s didn’t disappoint. The mustard-based sauce was a team favorite; its tangy and sweet flavor profile makes the perfect brisket partner. They also offer a spicy and sweet version, giving everyone something to drizzle and dip.

So, if you’re cruising down Hwy 27 and your BBQ cravings hit, make a pit stop at Smokin’ DJ’s.

Stay tuned as we continue our Polk County BBQ tour!  Next stop: your local favorite?
